we all need a little reminder...

so tonight was the Baylor's School of Social Work Annual Family Dinner.  every year the school, alumni, community practitioners and other important people get together to celebrate social work.  many students were honored tonight and I was reminded of why I do what I do and the value of it all once again.  it is often too easy to get engulfed in the day to day business and forget why it is that we each do what we do.  many of the students spoke of a "calling" to social work, a need to help others who need a helping hand, and the sense of community that is sprung from the use of social work and how important that is to the human condition.  and this is me.  this is how I feel.  I value every relationship that I have, whether it be with a friend, a client, a family member or a "stranger" at the store.  I also value the profession of social work and the good that can come from it to any and all in need.  many times we do not realize that there are impoverished people, people who have dealt with many injustices, people with no family and no support system in our own backyard.  and not only in our own backyard but in every corner of the world. 

anyhow, I don't really know where I'm going with this except that tonight really renewed my faith in social work and in the field that I have chosen for my life-long career.  I love it.
